Seems that even our residential turkeys that live on the property at Le Barn are experiencing spring fever! They’re out and about and have been spotted frolicking in the woods and around the brook.
On one of our many tours around the property, we were delighted to find a nest full of turkey eggs under one of our bushes in the woods! Turkeys usually lay eggs between April and June. These eggs will hatch in about 28–30 days.
Did you know that Benjamin Franklin originally wanted to make the turkey the national bird of the United States, and not the bald eagle? Did you know that domestic turkeys that are raised on a farm are too heavy to fly and that wild turkeys are, in fact able to take flight? Did you know that baby turkeys are called poults?
Over the next few weeks, we’ll try to keep watch over the nest without disturbing anything, and if we’re lucky, we might be able to show you pictures of the newborn poults in about a month.
